Painting of Spanish Armada
The Spanish Armada was a fleet of ships that was sent by Spain's Catholic King Philip II to combat the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I of England. Sir Francis Drake was the English leader meanwhile the Duke of Medina Sedonia led the Armada of Spain. This Armada was sent partly because of Anglo-Spanish differences in religious beliefs, commercial competition, and English aid to Protestant Dutch rebels. The Armada's mission was to escort an army to settle an uprising in Spanish ruled Netherlands. However, the fleet was met with disaster when it got stopped by the English defensive ships and a rough storm. Nonetheless, the superior Spanish navy was able to regroup and combat the yet not so strong English navy.
The Armada itself was an amazing feat. It was armed with hundreds of canons, guns, swords and other wartime materials. It was quite difficult for Francis Drake to defeat this fleet of large ships. Unfazed by this realization, Drake, along side Giambelli (an Italian), came up with a plan of sending highly combustible ships into the Armada late one night. These ships were known as Hell Burners. This plan dissipated the crescent formation of the Armada and made them vulnerable to the English attacks. The Armada was eventually sent around the west coast of Ireland, where they were met with the disapproving weather. Many believed that the series of unfortunate events caused the Spanish's defeat.
